It is hard to start with such a grateful review, but as soon as i close my eyes and think about everything, since the guys picked us up, until the moment -the very sad moment- when we say goodbye at the Arusha hotel, I remember how amazing, perfect, well organized and simply unforgettable was this experience. Because, for us, it was more, much much more than just a safari. The places we've been, the things we've seen, and more important, the people we've met - and by this I of course mean Isaac, Eliudi, Mandi, Loy, (and João, even when we haven't actually met) - made a lifetime memory of this trip to us. Specially since we had the biggest expectation about this, cause of the time we needed, the money we spent, and the long distance from home.
But from the very first moment, to the last one, this guys gave everything, EVERYTHING, in order to make us feel like royalty. And how much we learned with Isaac, who easily could be a teacher, showing during the whole trip that he is more, way way much more than just a driver. Or the soup that Mandy made, the very best that we both have ever tried. And everything was like a fairy tale, where even the weather (which i assume you don't control) couldn't be better.
We saw every single animal, even the hard ones, that one can't expect to see. A lot of times each. The pictures were amazing, and every single person that saw them, told us that it must been the most unbelievable trip in the history. And they committed no mistake...
I am a very very lucky person who has been traveling around the world for the last ten years. Europe, America, Asia, Oceania... and now Africa. I've been to Africa a year ago as well, but just South Africa. And I can say that never, never, in the tons of excursions and day trips I took, I've met such an experienced, will to teach, and good person as Isaac and his crew.
We also want to express how considered he was while being in the parks, letting us take all the pictures that we wanted, and never saying no to anything, just helping, teaching and having a big smile on his face, always ready and prepared for us, for make us feel -again- like we rule the parks!!!
I would also like to let you know that, the schedule of the safari, was just perfect. How many days per park, or how long to stay there, was just the time we needed. not more, not less. And Loy, at the office, did his part, and was always ready to help us, and he did, and literally save our lives when he could change our flight tickets to Zanzibar, paying with his own money for the charge.
So I think that you cannot be more proud about the people that you have on this firm. AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND FOR EVER... THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!
I have been on a five day safari with these guys, together with my mother and my sister - and I can assure all of you out there that the experience was utterly amazing and that we had a really wonderful time. Don't worry about the company being a small one or a no-name one. The most important fact is that it is a genuine one made up of dedicated people that really work hard and give their all in order to satisfy their clients and make their experience an unforgettable one. And that is what really matters in the end, not size and popularity - in fact, I'm pretty sure that there exist far bigger and more popular companies that might not be able to give you such a good and complete experience for the simple reason that they would have become somewhat arrogant and started taking their clients for granted. Anyway, I would definitely recommend It Started in Africa. I did a lot of research and investigations and comparisons and short-listings in choosing this company (there are so many safari companies out there), and I still had some doubts even after I had taken the decision.
But now that I've gone with them and it's over (unfortunately), I can honestly say that I don't have the slightest regret regarding my choice, and that I would happily go with them again. Really, I can think of nothing to grumble about - they provided great help and assistance in planning the entire Tanzania trip, including the week in Zanzibar following the safari (selection of itinerary, transfers, accommodation) and they executed every detail that we planned together to perfection, the equipment provided (jeep, camping equipment, binoculars, et cetera) was good, and the service (food, guidance, staff friendliness, et cetera) was also excellent.

Joao, who spent weeks helping us in planning the entire trip (safari and Zanzibar) and patiently answering my many e-mails and questions and trying to make everything as clear and smooth as possible; Isaac, who was our very friendly and awesome guide and driver, always joking and laughing around but with a very sharp eye for any living thing and with a very good knowledge and experience of the area (and very clear explanations and guidance) - thanks to him and to his patience, we even managed to see a kill (lioness vs. gazelle) happening right in front of our noses (at one point, the lioness was actually touching our jeep);
Fadhil, who was our very good cook - he cooked us food that was so good that you wouldn't expect to find it during a camping trip, and he also took very good care of my mother's special food requirements (she is gluten intolerant); and Mr. Baraja and Mr. Loy, who both work at the office in Arusha and who were both very nice, friendly, and helpful people the few times that we met them before and after the safari.
We just recently came back from our camping safari and it was an amazing experience! My first interaction with anyone from the company was with Loy and I couldn't have met a more welcoming and nicer man than him. I can't say enough nice things about him.
Our driver Michael not only is one of the most patient people as he waited for us to see everything we wanted to see and never driving off too early, but he is incredibly skilled at being able to spot animals far away. For example, he was able to spot a leopard in a tree that no one else would've known was there but after he pointed out the leopard, we were all able to see it.
Our cook was also fabulous (and I'm a very hard person to feed because there are so many foods I don't like) and he worked really hard at making our culinary experiences good. It Started In Africa truly gave us an amazing experience and a wonderful vacation. Thank you!
Five of us recently came off a 7 day basic camping safari itinerary with It Started in Africa to Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. I have to say, overall we were very impressed. I'd say the defining characteristic of ISIA is an exceptional commitment to customer service and responsiveness. With a safari to remote and rugged areas, things will go wrong. Something will inevitably break. Itineraries will change.
Like many others, our safari was not event-free, but ISIA was all over anything that came up and made sure our safari was a fabulous experience. We booked only a basic camping safari, but on our first two nights, ISIA judged that the unusual late June rains had made the mosquitos at our intended camp too thick, so they upgraded us to a higher elevation permanent tented camp without so much as a word from us. Wow.
After two days touring Tarangire and then Manyara, the front passenger seat in our Land Cruiser broke a hinge, so that very night ISIA swapped us to a different jeep coming off safari and sent the guide right back out to keep us on track in the Serengeti and Ngorongor Crater. Our company respresentative Joao, highly responsive and flexible during the booking process, met us for drinks after our safari and we all shared our best animal spotting stories. You can select from dozens of larger companies, but you'd be hard pressed to find one working harder for you.
Firstly thank you again for your understanding and service in rearranging our safari at such short notice. It really meant a lot to us as it was quite a stressful time when we missed out flights!
Our experience was fantastic. As John mentioned in the book of reviews we have been lucky enough to do guided tours on the inca trail in Peru, the pantanal in brazil, in china and India, south east Asia and Australia and would have to say the service your company provided was even better than all of these.

I would strongly recommend It Started in Africa: My friends Heloisa, Debora and I just got back from a trip with them. We had booked a 6-day safari, incl. Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti followed by a 7-day Kilimanjaro tour via the Machame route and 4 days Zanzibar. During the booking we were in touch with their marketing manager Joao Oliveira. The guy was very helpful in all respects and sent prompt responses to any requests/amendments to our schedule.
After a great Safari we continued our journey to Moshi, from where our Kili tour started. Our guide Lymo was outstanding and so was his whole team. We are all over 50 years old and the 3 of us managed to climb to the top (5895m) due to their very good assistance the whole time. It is not an easy climbing and I will be forever thankful for this guidance!
Zanzibar and the Langi Langi Restaurant was a deserved recovery rest! We really enjoyed out trip! And the relationship cpst/benefit is quite good!
We're back from our wonderful days of safari and exploration. Everything was great: the guides, the Masai gentleman, your representative who assisted us at the hotel, and, of course, the safari. I can't thank you enough for your outstanding service. Our boxed lunches were very nice and filling, the vehicles were clean and the drivers respectful and patient. They allowed us to take as many photos as our hearts desired. The days were ours to enjoy, they just helped us get the most out of every moment.
The whole experience at the Masai village was breathtaking. The people were warm and friendly; the children--adorable. The livestock and tribal dwellings were amazing. Our safari at Lake Tarangire was also fantastic. The animals were beautiful and very close. We got wonderful pictures to share with friends and family.
I can't say enough how impressed I was with the care giving in the planning of this trip. Our Happiness Manager was just that; our every wish was granted and more. Mambo! From the very first email inquiry to the day we left Africa, 'It Started In Africa' (ISIA) safari tours was great! Months before I planned on taking my wife on her dream vacation (an African safari) I contacted ISIA via email. Joao and Baraja were ontop of every email. From planning the best possible trip with my limited information to making the final adjustments right before we came, they were very helpful, courteous and professional. They set up everything from airfare to meals to side trips. They helped us come prepared (required vaccinations, visa information, etc.) Once we landing we didn't have to look for taxi's, hotels or restaurants. Their staff made this trip beyond outstanding. We saw the Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. The accommodations were wonderful and the food was fantastic. Our guide, Martin, was the best. Safe, knowledgeable, humorous and gracious. He made sure we were able to see every animal we wanted to see and so many more. We saw the Big 5 many times over. Lions, leopards, cheetahs all on the hunt. Large prides of lions with their young. And viewed many of the ever elusive Black Rhino's in the Ngorongoro Crater. On the last day we visited a Maasia village and school. We could not have asked for a better trip! Oh, and the cost was very affordable. Asante Sana 'It Started In Africa'.
As a family of 3 we travelled privately with 'It Started in Africa' this July and we are still talking of the amazing time we had. We chose the 6-day safari 'The Real Tanzanian Experience' and what an experience it was! -:) We saw so many animals including lions, cheetahs, leopards, hippos, giraffes, zebras and more. The animals were literally at the side of our Landrover!
Our excellent guide/driver, Gasper, knew the best places where to encounter the animals and he was very knowledgable about them. He was an all-rounder. He was a great organiser, he was fun to be with and he did his best to please us. We do not want to forget our chef, Samuel. He cooked the best meals we had in Tanzania. It's amazing how he created such delicous dishes with one stove and a bar-b-q grill! We stayed under canvas for 4 nights and I must say it was a wonderful experience. We then spent our last night at Rhino lodge which was tip top.
We also added on a day to visit a Masaai village. The chief, Ngongoi, spoke very good English and shared his family's way of life with us. It was a day we will never forget and we highly recommend this experience.
A big thank-you to 'It Started in Africa' for organising all our transfers, accommodation, internal flights, ferry and stay in Zanzibar. In preparation for our holiday I corresponded with Joao, who was extremely helpful and quick with his replies. I knew he would come back within a couple of hours. The office manager, Mattheas, and managing director, Baraja, were also very helpful.
As 'It Started in Africa' is a new company, we were a bit apprehensive about our choice, but now we can say that we did make the right choice. It is the personal touch which places this company way up there. Keep it up!
I and my wife had returned from our awesome safari a few weeks ago, with It Started in Africa - Tanzania Adventures and Safaris. I must say that was an unforgettable experience. I am still "processing" the huge set of incredible pictures we were lucky to take.

I would just like to say a huge thank you to everyone It Started in Africa - Tanzania Adventures and Safaris for the wonderfull safari I had, I really had a great time. Big thanks to the 3 guys who were looking after me, they went out of the way to make sure that I had everything I needed, even drove me to get beer every night. The food was fantastic, we even had a roast dinner on sunday. The highlight for me was camping on the Ngorongoro crater and waking up to find 10 or so zebra outside my tent, will never forget that. I would highly recommend your company to anyone wishing to go on safari in Tanzania. Again Thanks so much
We were a little wary about using It Started In Africa as we had trouble verifying that the company really existed. It turned out that they are new (I believe that the organization was officially registered in February 2012) and small (we only met one other group using them). However (consequently?), they were flexible and keen to please. Although the organization is new, the staff that we encountered were highly professional and had considerable experience. With input from us, they organized a safari for 4 people out of Arusha covering Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro National Parks followed by a hike from Empakai Crater down the escarpment of the Rift Valley to Lake Natron (and for those who wanted, a night ascent of the Oldonyo Lengai volcano - the Maasai's Mountain of God).
Isaac our guide and Obed our cook were unfailingly cheerful, fed us and took excellent care of us. Isaac's fountain of knowledge about the countryside and ability to spot hidden animals at considerable distances while driving on dusty, badly corrugated roads at 40km/hr was impressive. More impressive still, was his ability to accurately identify every bird that we saw.
We were concerned on our last day when our 4WD broke down at the wrong end of the road marked on the map as "Very Bad Track to Lake Natron - 4 x 4 only - Impassable after heavy rains". With considerable resourcefulness, they got us and our luggage onto alternate transport and on our way within an hour and a half. The original vehicle (which required a mechanic + welder + generator) arrived in Arusha 36 hours later.
In a small company, individuals make a large difference. We had a wonderful time. Would we use them again? Absolutely!
I was fortunate enough to be on one of the first safaris with ItStartedInAfrica, and it went great! It wasn't expensive (we had pretty-much a 2-people private safari), Baraja and Mr. Loy are super-friendly, they made sure everything was set and agreed before we left.
The food was really good! We slept in very comfortable tents, it went great. And Alex, our guide wouldn't rush through stuff so we ended up going at our own rhythm and enjoyed it much more like that. Thanks!
I would like to thank you for your assistance in organizing our trip to Tanzania. Our experiences exceeded our expectations and we both enjoyed our climb, safari, and visit to Zanzibar very much.
Our climb of Mount Kilimanjaro was spectacular, and although I did not achieve the summit, the experience has left many fond memories. Please extended my gratitude to Mr. Agostin and to our guide for the climb Andrew and his team. Both of us are keen to attempt the climb again next year!
Our safari experience was spectacular also, we did not expect to get so close to the animals, and although we were frustrated by the water pressure at some lodges, we cherish the memories of the nights spent in the tented accommodations provided by the various lodges. Please extended our gratitude to Mr. Mathis and our safari driver and guide Johnson. We have many wonderful photographs and memories of the safari journey through the various conservation parks of Tanzania.
Our excursion to Zanzibar was also a memorable experience. The beaches were spectacular and the seafood was fantastic! After weeks of lunch boxes and camping food, the Z Hotel was pure luxury, and Lindy especially appreciated the hot showers and warm water of the swimming pool and Indian Ocean.
Since our experience was so positive, we intend to return to Tanzania next year around similar dates to attempt another climb, hopefully more successfully (and I have started training already), and experience another safari perhaps to other national conservation areas (perhaps you could make some suggestions), and conclude with a longer restful period in Zanzibar. I will be in touch in the near future to make further arrangements.

My husband and I just got back from our honeymoon that included a 6 day safari and 6 day Zanzibar trip, all organized by It Started in Africa, and would could not be happier with how everything went. We had a truly remarkable time. Everything was extremely well-organized and professional. I'd highly recommend It Started in Africa to anyone making a trip to Tanzania :)
Just returned from an 8 night 9 day customized safari with ISIA. Very pleased, great experience. Knowledgeable driver/guide and a great cook. We appreciated what they did for us and they were really nice to travel with. Some high points: Our guide, Isaac, really knew all of the animals and birds and where to find them. We saw all of the wildlife that we hoped to see. Our cook Obed (Ahbed?) was great. Good meals and friendly service all the time. I thoroughly enjoyed hiking from Empakai Crater to Lake Natron with our gear travelling on donkeys. I think we really saw Africa without "tourist" glasses on.
We did another safari in Kenya and ISIA was much, much better. If you haven't been on a safari before you probably need to talk to some people who have. If you're used to staying in nice hotels and travelling in air condition buses you are in for a little culture shock. We are in our 60's and found it to be a wonderful experience. Every night we slept in tents, sometimes with cots but often on a map on the ground (took one night to get over that!). Hot water was sporadic and bathrooms were very basic. This has nothing to do with the company you choose, it's just how things are in rural Africa. I'm not sure many of my friends would choose to travel like this, preferring catered, all inclusive luxury to a trip like this. Too bad for them. This was an unforgettable experience of a lifetime, thanks in a large part to ISIA.
All of the people we met in Tanzania and Kenya were very pleasant, polite and helpful. If you can say "how are you" in Swahili, you will be greeted with a beaming smile and a very friendly reply.
I just had a short two day/one night safari tour in Ngorongoro crater and Lake Manyara. I was very happy with the service provided by the staff (guide Simon and driver Eliud) of It Started in Africa.
They were willing to go extra-miles to make my trip very pleasant and memorable. My prior tour apprehension (woman travel alone) was approved totally unnecessary.
I just arrived back in Kuala Lumpur after two weeks in Tanzania :) Thanks guys, the safari could not be more perfect. My Husband and I also used It Started In Africa and our guide was Thobias. It was the most amazing experience of our lives. The service was incredible. At the end of our safari before heading to Zanzibar i broke my camera and was devastated BUT It Started In Africa came to the rescue and lent me one of their cameras to take with me to the island of Zanzibar. It was very gracious and generous on their part. Our chef was fantastic and the food was beyond my expectations.
Would like to give a six out of five.Martin, our driver and Pasco, our cook were always very nice and helpful. Only, could not meet Joao, the Customer Happiness Manager as he was out of town.

Serengeti is a special place on this planet. And 'It Started in Africa' made visiting this special place a wonderful experience for us. Just back from a brilliant safari with ISIA. The best safari companies are all about by the quality of people - and this small but growing company has some excellent staff. Isaac is a superb guide who knows as much about trees and birds as he does animals. Peter is a great cook and the office staff, especially Matthias and Joao, do everything possible to answer any questions you may have in advance and learn from any small glitches that might occur during the trip. The powerful binoculars they provide make a huge difference to the quality of the experience and the vehicles and campsites are perfectly comfortable even for someone of mature years like me! Thank you all for a wonderful experience in Lake Manyara, Tarangire, the Serengeti and above all, the incomparable Ngorogoro Crater - probably the most beautiful place I have ever visited.

Most amazing experience in Africa! We were a group of 11 persons, with very specific needs and "It all started in Africa" managed to fulfill all our expectations, arranging a very flexible and incredible 4 day safari including Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara. The food was amazing, the guides were THE BEST guides ever, one even spoke Spanish which was very cool (we were a group of Latin American people). I would recommend it to everyone, they are a very professional company.

Just did a 4 day safari with these guys and would recommend them highly. The guide was a nice guy and we all got on well. We were also very happy with the standard of food, which was a pleasant surprise. I felt that we were given plenty of opportunity to customise our safari and choose exactly what we wanted to do.
Thank you 'It Started in Africa' - We very much enjoyed the 5 day/4 night safari in Lake Manyara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro. We saw the big 5 including four leopards and a male lion which is very rare. Seeing the cheetah hunt for prey was one of the best parts of the animal watching experience along with how close some of the animals were. Isaac, our driver was not only knowledgeable about the animals, wildlife, and best viewing spots, but had the most incredible set of eyes. It was pretty unbelievable what he was able to spot from afar. Further, Isaac was personable and fun to talk to. I do recommend a safari with 'It Started in Africa' - they were organized, fun, and experienced. Lastly the food and accommodations were excellent. Have your camera ready!

My father (65), my girlfriend (31) and I (30) (Canada) did a 6 night 7 day private camping safari with ItStartedInAfrica in mid January 2012. We visited Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and Ngoronongoro Crater. All the arrangements were taken care of, we had comfortable tents with bedding and the our guide and cook were happy to adjust to any suggestions that we had. We had a lot of fun on the tour and we saw more wildlife than we ever expected. Safaris are a great investment and ItStartedInAfrica will certainly show you a good time.
